The island of Corfu, best known of the seven Ionian islands that lie off the north-west coast of Greece, differs markedly from the other popular Greek islands because not only is it green and lush, but also very developed with tourist resorts and hotels. Summer time is hectic on Corfu, with charter flights arriving daily from European cities, ferries disgorging travellers from Italy, and cruise ships docking. There is plenty to draw visitors to this magical island. Modern Corfu Town is upbeat and cosmopolitan, offering an exciting conglomeration of Greek, Italian, French and British influences.

When to go

The beaches, resorts and amenities in Corfu are so diverse that the island has the wonderful holiday elements for almost everyone. This is one of the most attractive islands with its dazzling natural beauty and archaeological sites. With sure-fire sunshine, incredible beaches, pleasing seas, water sport facilities, golfing, tourism in the old towns and a colossal variety of taverns and restaurants, Corfu undoubtedly has something for everyone.

Corfu Town: Modern Corfu Town is upbeat and cosmopolitan, offering an exciting conglomeration of Greek, Italian, French and British influences. The old town was laid out by the Venetians in the 14th century and features narrow alleys lined with multi-storeyed pastel-coloured buildings with red tiled roofs, creating a scene reminiscent of Italy. The hub of activity in the town centre is the Liston, an arcaded row of cafes and restaurants, copied from the Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

Aqualand Waterpark: Located outside of the town of Kerkyra, nice food/restaurant and a large parking area. Most of the usual slides you would expect to find plus a few 'out of water' activities for children of all ages. You can buy a ticket at the gate for around 24 Euros or most hotels can arrange tours which include transportation. Next to the water park is the Aqualand village made up of mainly of all inclusive studio apartments which can be booked via our website BUT it's not one of our recommend hotels for the simple reason that it keeps changing agents and we can only guess why.

Touring the island: There's a host of day trips available from most of the main resorts and all offer a great way to see more of this charming island. Here are a few of our favourites. The Achilleion Palace named after the Greek God Aechillis is open to the public (entrance around 6 Euros) for viewing, together with it's impressive gardens, that show a lot of statues representing Greek gods.
 

Paleokastritsa is a picturesque village situated about 25km from Corfu Town on the northwest of the island. It offers a choice of 16 small beaches along with a short boat trip to see the local caves or you could visit the local monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary which stands on a rocky promontory above the town.

Eating out: Wherever you decide to stay on the island you will find plenty of eateries. One of our favourites is the Tripa Tavern which can be found in the picturesque village Kinopiastes 7km west of Corfu Town. This makes a great Greek night out.
